The Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Africa is a free, six-course online programme from Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa). It is for learners who want to build AI applications that fit the African context, from undergraduate students to working professionals. The courses were designed by Carnegie Mellon engineering professors, and the programme is cost-free for qualified applicants.

Status: Open. Applications close on November 15, 2026. CMU-Africa accepts applications and recommendations from October 15 to November 15, 2026. The next cohort starts on January 17, 2027 (checked October 19, 2026).

What it covers

The certificate has six courses in two tracks. Each course has 14 or 15 lessons of about three hours, so each one takes about 45 hours.

Perspective and context track

  • Artificial Intelligence: Past, Present and Future
  • AI and Machine Learning in Africa

Technical track

  • Python for AI
  • Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning
  • Machine Learning Essentials
  • Applied Generative AI

You earn a digital badge for each course you finish. When you complete all six, you get a shareable, verifiable certificate. The certificate is not for university credit, so it is not a degree or a diploma.

Who can apply

CMU-Africa says the programme is for a range of learners, from undergraduates to working professionals. It targets early-career people looking for internships or entry-level AI roles, and mid-career technical staff. The official page does not set a nationality or country rule.

Before you apply, you should have:

  • Introductory courses in linear algebra and in probability and statistics.
  • Some computer programming experience.
  • A laptop or desktop computer with reliable internet.
  • At least five hours a week to work on the lessons.

Enrolment is by invitation. CMU-Africa picks learners based on their applications and the space available in the cohort.

How to apply

  1. Read the official certificate page to check the courses and prerequisites.
  2. Go to the CMU-Africa application page and click Apply.
  3. Enter your name and contact details, academic background and work experience.
  4. Upload your CV.
  5. Write a short statement on your personal and professional goals.
  6. Submit before November 15, 2026, then watch your email for an invitation.

Employers, lecturers, mentors and people at government bodies, non-profits or foundations can also recommend a learner they know personally during the same window.

Tips before you apply

  • Be honest about your maths and coding level. The technical courses expect you to have the basics already.
  • If your Python is weak, practise before January so the first course does not overwhelm you.
  • Keep your goals statement specific. Say what AI problem you want to work on and why it matters where you live.
  • Ask a lecturer or manager who knows your work to submit a recommendation for you.
  • Plan your data and power. Each course takes about 45 hours online.
  • Remember this is a free certificate, not a scholarship for a degree. It will not pay tuition or living costs.

Details are taken from the official Carnegie Mellon University Africa website, checked on October 19, 2026. Confirm the current rules there before you apply.
