On this page
Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, is recruiting one PhD student in environmental hydrology for Fall 2027. The student will join the Chattopadhyay Hydroecology Lab, led by Dr. Somsubhra Chattopadhyay in the Department of Biology, and enrol in the PhD in Integrative and Applied Biology. The position pays $37,000 a year plus benefits, with funding for 4.5 years.
Status: Open. The deadline is 30 November 2026 (checked October 30, 2026). The lab page says international applicants are welcome, so you can apply from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or India. The Graduate College still sets English test rules, and the official pages do not confirm whether your country is exempt.
What it covers
- A stipend of $37,000 a year plus benefits for 4.5 years.
- Funding for one national and one regional conference each year.
- Teaching assistant duties for four semesters, plus mentoring undergraduates.
The lab page does not say whether tuition, fees or health insurance are covered. Ask the supervisor before you accept an offer.
The research
You will study how changes in water flow, climate change and human activity affect rivers and streams, with likely fieldwork in the Texas Hill Country. You pick one direction: why streams stop flowing, forecasting floods and low flows with SWAT+ and data models, or linking flow to aquatic life using environmental DNA.

- An MS degree is preferred, but not required.
- Skills in modelling, GIS, R, Python or statistics help.
