Many universities in Europe ask international applicants to sit an admission test before they offer a place. This guide covers five common ones: UCAT, LNAT and ESAT in the UK, TestAS in Germany, and TOLC and CEnT-S in Italy. Each is run by its own organiser, and each is used only by certain universities and courses. Use this guide to work out which test you need, what it costs and when you can still sit it for 2027 entry.

Status: No single deadline. Each test has its own dates (checked October 30, 2026). UCAT testing for 2027 entry has closed, and so have the Oxford and Cambridge LNAT deadline and the October ESAT sitting. LNAT for other universities, the January 2027 ESAT, TestAS and the Italian tests are still open. None of the organisers confirm test centres in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or India on their main pages, so check each test centre locator before you plan.

UCAT for medicine and dentistry

The UCAT is a two hour computer test with four parts: verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning and situational judgement. Testing for 2027 entry ran from 13 July to 24 September 2026. If you missed it, plan for 2028 entry and watch the official UCAT dates page.

LNAT for law

The LNAT lasts 2 hours 15 minutes. You answer 42 multiple choice questions on 12 passages, then write one essay. There are over 500 test centres worldwide. Check the LNAT dates and deadlines for your chosen university.

ESAT for science and engineering

The ESAT has five 40 minute modules. Maths 1 is compulsory and most candidates take two more. Oxford and Cambridge applicants needed the October sitting, so the January sitting suits other courses that accept it. Booking opened on 28 October 2026 on the official ESAT deadlines page.

TestAS for Germany

TestAS has a core module plus one subject module, in English or German. You see your price when you register, because fees depend on your country. Book through the TestAS dates and registration page.

TOLC and CEnT-S for Italy

CISIA runs these tests. CEnT-S replaced the English TOLC-I, TOLC-E and TOLC-F from November 2025. It has 55 questions in 110 minutes. You can sit both from home if your chosen university accepts home results. Read the official CEnT-S guide.

Tips before you apply

  • Check each course page first. Not every university or course needs a test.
  • Search the official locator for a centre in your country before you pay.
  • Book well before each booking deadline.
  • Practise with official sample questions where the organiser offers them.
  • CISIA accepts payment by card or Italian bank slip only, so confirm your card works abroad.

Details are taken from the official UCAT, LNAT, ESAT, TestAS and CISIA websites, checked on October 30, 2026. Confirm the current rules there before you apply.
