The Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji Legacy Scholarship gives $5,000 to one first- or second-generation African immigrant student in a STEM major. High school seniors and undergraduates can apply. The deadline is November 14, 2026.

Status: Open. Applications close on November 14, 2026, and the winner is announced on December 15, 2026 (checked October 14, 2026).

Who Dr. Nnaji was

The Nnaji family funds this scholarship in his memory. Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji was born in Zaria and raised in Owerri, Nigeria. He earned degrees in agricultural and civil engineering, and in hydrology and water resources, in the United States and Israel.

His family describes him as a father, mentor, educator and community leader who valued education and Nigerian culture. The scholarship supports students who share his commitment to education and to their communities.

Who can apply

  • High school seniors, or undergraduates at a two-year or four-year college
  • First- or second-generation African immigrants
  • Students in a STEM-related major
  • Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher

A strong record of community volunteering and involvement in African student associations is preferred, but it is not required.

The scholarship page does not list a citizenship rule. Bold.org welcomes students of any citizenship, but it can only send scholarship money to schools in the United States. So you need to study at, or plan to attend, a US school.

The essay

Write 400 to 600 words that answer three questions:

  • How have you contributed to your community, and what impact has it had?
  • How has your heritage as a first- or second-generation African immigrant shaped your education, values and goals?
  • How would this scholarship help your education and your STEM career?

The judges look for ambition, drive and passion.
