The University of Georgia (UGA) in the United States is recruiting a graduate student for a funded research assistantship in aquatic animal health and sustainable aquaculture. The position sits in the Aquatic One Health Lab at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and is supervised by Dr. Jie “Jessie” Ma. You can join at MS or PhD level, and the funding includes a stipend, tuition support and graduate benefits.
Status: Open, with rolling review. The deadline is 1 January 2027 (checked October 30, 2026). The lab may fill the post before then, so apply early. The posting does not limit nationality. At UGA Graduate School level, applicants from Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya do not need TOEFL or IELTS, but applicants from India do. A Nigerian HND and an Indian three year bachelor’s degree are not treated as equal to a US bachelor’s degree.
What it covers
The assistantship mixes research and teaching duties of at least 20 hours a week. In return you get a competitive stipend, tuition support and graduate benefits, subject to university policy and funding. The posting does not state the stipend amount or say whether tuition is fully waived. Ask Dr. Ma about both before you accept.
The project is on disease detection, prevention and vaccine strategies for farmed fish. Work may include pathogen isolation, vaccine testing, fish immune responses and field visits to farms, hatcheries and diagnostic labs.
Who can apply
- You hold a BS or MS in a related field, such as aquaculture, microbiology or veterinary science.
- You are interested in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, bioinformatics or aquatic animal health.
