On this page
Western University in London, Ontario, funds eligible research students in its Faculty of Engineering. This guide explains how that funding works for MESc and PhD students in Mechanical and Materials Engineering, including those interested in fluid mechanics. It is for graduates who want a research degree in Canada and need to know who qualifies and when to apply.
Status: Cannot verify the single position. Western’s official pages do not list a fluid mechanics position with a May 2027 start, so its supervisor, funding and citizenship terms cannot be confirmed. For the department’s May start, the international deadline of October 1 has passed. Applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India should look at the September route instead (checked November 2, 2026).
What the funding covers
The Western Engineering funding page gives eligible research PhD and MESc students a minimum of $13,000 plus tuition, excluding ancillary fees, from all sources. After a PhD student completes the comprehensive exam, the minimum rises to $14,000 plus tuition. Support comes from research grants, contracts, scholarships and teaching assistantships.
This is a minimum package, not a separate scholarship you apply for. The page does not state separate funding rules for international students, so ask the department before you apply.
Who can apply
- Applicants to research MESc or PhD programmes with a minimum average of 78%.
- To keep funding, you must maintain a minimum average of 70%.
- English results must be verified by Western. The department page does not list test scores here, so check the international applicants page.
- The MEng is course or project based, and the funding notes apply to MESc and PhD applicants.
