Can you get an HND master’s in Australia? Each university sets its own entry rules, so your result counts differently at each one. This guide shows applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India with an HND or a second-class or third-class degree what official pages say, and where a graduate certificate may help.
Status: No single deadline. Each university sets its own intakes and closing dates. None of the official pages read for this guide says that an HND alone gives entry to a master’s, or sets an entry point for a Third Class degree from these four countries. You also need a Student visa if you plan to study in Australia (checked November 4, 2026).
What official pages say about second class
| University | Published minimum for master’s entry |
|---|---|
| Macquarie University, July 2026 table | Nigeria: GPA 3.2 out of 5 for WAM 50, the lowest column. India: 50% or 5.0 out of 10, by grading group. Higher courses ask for more. Ghana and Kenya are not listed. |
| Victoria University guide | Coursework master’s. Nigeria: Second Class Honours (Lower Division). Kenya: 50% overall average. India: Second Division (55%). Ghana is not listed. The guide shows no date, so confirm it. |
| Western Sydney University table | All four countries: a recognised bachelor degree equivalent to an Australian degree. Some awards are assessed individually. The table shows no date. |
Read the Macquarie table with care. It says GPA 3.0 equals Lower Second Class in Nigeria, but its lowest column asks for 3.2. So a Lower Second at 3.0 does not reach that column.
What this means for HND holders
UTS lists the Nigerian and Ghanaian HND under undergraduate entry. For most postgraduate courses, UTS looks at your performance at bachelor’s level. Victoria University asks for an undergraduate qualification comparable to an Australian bachelor’s degree, honours degree or graduate diploma. Do not assume your HND meets that test. Ask each admissions team to assess it in writing.
Graduate certificate routes
The University of Queensland calls a graduate certificate the usual stepping stone to a master’s without a bachelor’s degree. These examples show how entry can work.
- Western Sydney University, Graduate Certificate in Business: a degree, or 5 years of managerial or professional work, or a business advanced diploma plus 8 years of general work. Overseas qualifications must be assessed as equivalent.
- UTS 2027 course table: the Graduate Certificate in Learning Design accepts 4 or more years of relevant experience, among other routes.
- University of Queensland, Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies: a bachelor’s degree, or post-secondary study plus 2 years of relevant full-time work. You also need a GPA of 4.0 out of 7 in your previous qualification, by UQ’s calculation.
- Edith Cowan University: 5 years of relevant professional experience may qualify you for a graduate certificate. The page warns that visa restrictions may apply.
Finishing a certificate does not by itself promise you a master’s place, so ask about progression and credit first.
Student visa points
- You upload a current Confirmation of Enrolment to your ImmiAccount.
- Use the Document Checklist Tool to see the evidence asked of you, including any English or financial proof.

How to apply
- Pick two or three courses and read each international entry page.
- Convert your result using that university’s table, if it has one.
- Email admissions with your transcript and ask if your qualification is accepted.
- If it is not, ask which graduate certificate or other route they accept.
- Apply, accept your offer, then start your Student visa (subclass 500) application.
Tips before you apply
- Check your exact GPA or percentage, not only your class.
- Collect employer letters that show dates, duties and hours.
