A January start lets you begin a UK degree without waiting for the next September. Each university runs its own January intake, so courses, fees and deadlines differ. This guide compares three universities that publish January 2027 dates: Northumbria, Portsmouth and Greenwich. It is for international students, with most detail for applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India.

Status: Open, no single deadline. Applications are open at Northumbria until 30 November 2026. At Portsmouth, the deadline depends on your country and some dates have already passed for Nigerian applicants. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India all face earlier dates than some other countries, and Greenwich asks applicants from these countries to pay full tuition before it issues a CAS (checked November 2, 2026).

Portsmouth lists a separate Kenya group for Eldoret applicants, who follow the Ghana dates. Courses can close early if they fill up.

What each university offers

  • Northumbria: its January intake page lists courses in Newcastle, London and by distance learning. These include MSc Computer Science, Data Science, Project Management, Business and Management, and an MBA. Not every postgraduate course has a January start.
  • Portsmouth: registration opens on 11 January 2027 and teaching begins on 18 January 2027. See the Portsmouth deadlines page for all country groups.
  • Greenwich: the Greenwich CAS page sets out a £3,000 deposit before the CAS process begins. For January 2027, applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India must pay 100% of tuition before CAS. The latest arrival date is 29 January 2027.

Limits to watch at Northumbria

The Northumbria key dates page says it can close routes for a region on a given course with three calendar days of notice if applications from one country are oversubscribed. MSc Nursing, Midwifery and Physiotherapy use a separate phased model, and the final phase is for UK-based applicants only.

How to apply

  1. Choose a course and confirm on its own page that it has a January 2027 start.
  2. Find the deadline for your nationality and campus.
  3. Apply with your transcripts, English test results and any other documents the course asks for.
  4. Accept your offer, then pay the deposit and any further tuition the university requires.
  5. Request your CAS and apply for your Student visa.

Visa timing

The UK Student visa page says you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts if you are outside the UK. The fee is £558, and you also pay the healthcare surcharge. A decision usually takes 3 weeks from outside the UK. You must also show enough money for your course and living costs.

Tips before you apply

  • Work back from the CAS date, not the application date. A late deposit can cost you the intake.
  • If you choose Greenwich and are from one of the listed countries, budget for full tuition before your CAS.
  • Check that your course length still fits your plans. Northumbria says the main difference from September is the time taken to complete the degree.
  • Search scholarships separately. A course can stay open after a linked scholarship has closed.
  • An offer does not guarantee a visa, so do not book travel until your visa is issued.

Details are taken from the official Northumbria, Portsmouth, Greenwich and GOV.UK websites, checked on November 2, 2026. Confirm the current rules there before you apply.
