On this page
The France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship is a French government award for top international students. It funds master’s, engineering and joint PhD study at French universities. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs runs it, and Campus France manages it.
Status: Open for French university nominations. The 2027 Eiffel call has been published. January 6, 2027 is the deadline for French higher education institutions to submit nominations to Campus France, not the deadline for students to send personal applications. Each French university sets an earlier internal student deadline. Contact an eligible university now and ask when it will stop accepting candidates. Read the official Campus France 2027 announcement.
What the scholarship covers
- A monthly allowance of €1,200 for master’s students
- A monthly allowance of €2,000 for doctoral scholarship holders under the 2027 official implementation terms.
- An international flight and travel within France
- Insurance
- Help finding housing, and cultural activities
Tuition and fees: the Eiffel allowance does not itself pay tuition, but French government scholarship holders at eligible public institutions can be exempt from tuition for national master’s, doctoral and accredited engineering degrees under the applicable French regulations. Other programme fees may remain. Ask the host institution what you would actually owe.
How long it lasts
- Up to 24 months if you enter the first year of a master’s (M1)
- Up to 12 months if you enter the second year of a master’s (M2)
- Up to 36 months for an engineering degree
- 12, 18 or 36 months for a PhD, starting on September 1
Your studies must start between September 1 and November 30, 2027, and the start date cannot be moved.
Fields you can study
- Biology and health
- Ecological transition
- Mathematics and digital technology
- Engineering sciences
- French history, language and civilisation
- Law and political science
- Economics and management
PhD funding is only for joint programmes, meaning joint supervision or a dual degree with a university outside France.
Who can apply
The programme is for international students who are admitted to an eligible master’s, engineering or joint doctoral programme at a French university and nominated by that university. It is very competitive, and being admitted does not guarantee a scholarship. You cannot hold an Eiffel Scholarship together with another French government scholarship, an Erasmus+ scholarship or a scholarship from the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie.
How to apply
- Choose an eligible programme at a French university.
- Contact its international relations office and ask if it is nominating students for Eiffel 2027.
- Ask for its internal deadline, which is usually earlier than the national one.
- Send the university the documents it asks for. The university submits your application to Campus France.
Applications sent directly by students or by universities outside France are not accepted. You can also contact Campus France in your country or the French embassy. Read the full rules on the official Campus France Eiffel page.
Tips before you apply
- Start with universities that have strong links to your country or field.
- Ask early, because each university picks only a few candidates to nominate.
- Ask whether the host programme qualifies for a government-scholar tuition exemption and budget for any additional fees the scholarship does not pay.
First choose the university, not the scholarship form
Eiffel is a nomination programme. You cannot send an individual application directly to Campus France. The university chooses whether to nominate candidates and submits an institutional file. For this reason, contacting a French university in October or November may be more useful than searching for a public Eiffel student application link.
The 2027 programme covers seven priority fields and has age conditions. Campus France’s regional guidance indicates a maximum of 29 years for master’s applicants and 35 for doctoral applicants; confirm how the cutoff is applied under the current regulations. A joint-supervision arrangement is particularly important for doctoral candidates.

Questions applicants often ask
Can Nigerian and Indian students apply?
The programme targets high-achieving international students selected by French institutions. Nationality and age restrictions must be checked in the current rules and with the nominating university.
Do I apply through the French Embassy?
No. For Eiffel, the formal nomination is submitted by a French higher education institution. Embassy or Campus France offices may provide guidance but do not replace the host university’s application process.
Is January 6 the student’s application deadline?
No. That date is for institutional nominations. Your chosen university will usually need your documents earlier.
