For a Nigerian applicant, the decisive source is the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria’s current call. The global programme description is broader than the eligibility and award type that an individual country may offer.
What the programme offers
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program’s application guide describes grants for master’s or doctoral study and research in the US. Listed benefits include J-1 visa sponsorship, funding support, a health benefit plan and enrichment activities. The precise length, placement model and financial terms depend on the country’s award. Do not assume that a Nigerian doctoral research call is a general master’s-degree scholarship.
Where Nigerians apply
Non-US citizens apply through the Fulbright Commission or US Embassy in their home country, not through the US-citizen Fulbright Student site. The Embassy’s Nigerian announcement should state the current eligible academic stage, citizenship and residence conditions, research areas, documents, application portal and deadline. Follow that announcement before paying for tests or seeking a host institution.
Prepare a strong research application
- Confirm that your academic stage fits the Nigerian call. If it is a doctoral research award, describe the research you will carry out in the US and its relationship to your home degree.
- Develop a focused project statement with a feasible schedule, methods and reasons the US host’s resources are needed.
- Gather the requested transcripts, references, CV and language-test information. Fulbright’s global guide notes that country-specific requirements can differ.
- Check whether the call uses placement by the programme or requires you to arrange admission or affiliation. Fulbright explains that these are distinct models.
Timing: As checked on 24 September 2026, we cannot verify a new 2027/28 Nigerian application deadline from an accessible official announcement. Treat dates repeated from earlier cycles as historical until the Embassy publishes a fresh call.
If you are applying from India
India’s route is administered by USIEF through Fulbright-Nehru fellowships, with different categories and requirements. Its 2027–28 Doctoral Research Fellowship deadline was 1 July 2026 and that call is closed. An Indian applicant should check USIEF for the next announced competition rather than submit through the Nigerian route.
