The Beijing Government Scholarship is funding from the Beijing municipal government for international students at universities in Beijing. It is for bachelor’s, master’s and PhD students, plus preparatory, visiting and research scholars. Depending on the category, it can cover tuition, accommodation, living costs and medical insurance.

Status: Open at some universities, with no single deadline. Each university sets its own dates. The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) is taking new students from 1 November 2026 to 15 June 2027. The scholarship is open to non-Chinese citizens with a foreign passport, and the official rules do not exclude Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan or Indian applicants. You still need to meet the age, grade and language limits below (checked November 5, 2026).

What it covers

There are three categories. Only Category A pays living costs, so do not assume every award is fully funded.

CategoryCovers
Category ATuition, accommodation, living expenses, medical insurance
Category BTuition, accommodation, medical insurance
Category CTuition, medical insurance

The university decides who gets an award and in which category. Funding is reviewed each year, and it can be changed or withdrawn if you fail the review.

Who can apply

Age limits apply at the time you enrol:

  • Bachelor’s: 25 or younger
  • Master’s: 35 or younger
  • PhD: 40 or younger
  • Undergraduate preparatory: 24 or younger
  • Visiting students: 45 or younger
  • Research scholars: 50 or younger

You cannot hold another scholarship from a Chinese government body, social organisation or your host university at the same time. One-off awards are allowed.

Universities can set higher limits. USTB, for example, asks for HSK 5 for Chinese-taught master’s and PhD study. Read the Beijing government scholarship rules and then your university’s notice.

How to apply

  1. Choose a university and programme on the Study in Beijing portal.
  2. Find that university’s scholarship notice and dates. Do not assume they match USTB’s.
  3. Prepare your documents. USTB asks for an application form, your highest certificate and transcripts, a language certificate, any research or award certificates, and an insurance payment receipt.
  4. Apply directly to the university. At USTB, new students select the scholarship in the admissions system. See the USTB 2027 scholarship notice.
  5. Pass the university’s admission assessment and wait for its decision.

Tips before you apply

  • Check dates early. Some notices are short. Beijing Normal University gave current students about one week in April 2026.
  • Check which categories your university offers. That same notice listed only Categories B and C.
  • Budget for living costs unless you win Category A.
  • Check your age against the limit on your enrolment date, not your application date.
  • Ask your referees early if you need two letters.

Details are taken from the official Beijing municipal government and University of Science and Technology Beijing websites, checked on November 5, 2026. Confirm the current rules there before you apply.
