On this page
The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a German political foundation. Its Washington, DC office is hiring paid interns for spring 2027 in three programme areas: Global Dialogue and Digital Policy, Climate and Democracy, and Foreign Policy and Communications. The internship is for current Bachelor’s and Master’s students and recent Bachelor’s graduates. Full-time interns get $700 a month. You can apply from outside the US. If you need a visa, the foundation says it can cover most of the costs of a J-1 visa, but it cannot promise the visa will be approved.
Status: Open, closing 30 October 2026. All three spring 2027 postings went live on 11 September 2026 and accept applications until 30 October 2026. Internships start on 1 March 2027. Only a few days are left, so apply now if you are interested (checked October 27, 2026).
What the internship offers
- A stipend of $700 a month for full-time interns, and a lower amount for part-time.
- Five paid vacation days for every three months of full-time work.
- Real work in a policy office: event and visitor logistics, front desk duties, research, social media and website content.
- A capstone project on a topic you choose, such as a 5 to 10 page policy paper, an expert interview, a short video script or a series of blog posts or op-eds.
- Help with most J-1 visa costs if you need a visa.
The three spring 2027 openings
| Internship | What you work on |
|---|---|
| Global Dialogue Internship | Global Dialogue and Digital Policy programmes |
| Climate & Democracy Internship | Transatlantic Democracy and Climate and Environmental Policy programmes |
| Foreign Policy & Communications Internship | Foreign and Security Policy programme and the communications team |
Each posting asks for a different challenge statement of up to 250 words, so read the one you choose closely.
Who can apply
- You are enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme, or you finished a Bachelor’s degree less than one year ago.
- You have at least two years of university study.
- You have some experience in the programme area you apply for.
- You have good English. German is not required.
- Mid-career professionals and people who have already completed a Master’s or PhD are not accepted.
Visa and work authorisation
This matters if you live in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or India. The postings say the foundation can cover most J-1 visa costs if you need one. The application form asks about your work authorisation for information only, and the official pages do not say you must already hold US work authorisation. The visa decision is still made by the US government, and approval is not guaranteed. Check US embassy appointment wait times in your country early, since the start date is 1 March 2027.
The foundation also warns that Washington, DC is expensive. It encourages you to look for outside funding or scholarships and to start searching for housing when you apply.
