On this page
This guide covers eight degree fields that can lead to well-paid work in Germany. It is for students from outside the EU who want to study and then work there. Germany’s official pages do not rank degrees by pay, and no degree guarantees a job or a salary. What they do show is where demand is strong and which rules apply.
Status: No single deadline. This is a career guide, not a scholarship, and it has no funding attached. If you are from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or India, you count as a third-country national, so you need a residence permit to work in Germany (checked November 2, 2026).
The salary figures to know
The EU Blue Card is the clearest official pay marker for graduates. It sets a minimum gross salary, not an average.
| Standard Blue Card, 2026 | €50,700 a year |
|---|---|
| Shortage occupations, 2026 | €45,934.20 a year, with Federal Employment Agency approval |
| Degree earned under three years ago | €45,934.20 a year, with Federal Employment Agency approval |
Pay still varies by employer, region, experience and language. See the official EU Blue Card page.
Eight fields to consider
Computer science and software engineering
The government lists IT specialists as in demand. IT is also one of the few areas where employers may not expect fluent German.
Data science and artificial intelligence
Academic STEM specialists are on the Blue Card shortage list, so this field can qualify for the lower threshold if your role fits.
Medicine
Physicians are in demand and on the shortage list. To practise you need a licence called Approbation. That means German at B2, and usually a specialist language exam at C1.
Nursing and healthcare
Nursing is regulated. Your qualification must be recognised and you need German at B2. Graduate-level nurses and midwives are on the shortage list.
Mechanical engineering
The government says many companies urgently need engineers. In most cases you can work without recognition, but you cannot use the title Engineer without it. Recognition needs German at B2. Rules are set by each state.
Electrical engineering
The same title rule applies. Engineering graduates also fall under academic STEM specialists for the shortage threshold.
Business administration and finance
This field is not on the official in-demand page or the shortage list. Expect the standard €50,700 threshold, unless your degree is under three years old. Experience and German will count for a lot.
Pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences
Pharmacists are on the shortage list and need Approbation, with German at B2 and usually a C1 specialist exam. Research and industry roles in pharmaceutics are listed among scientist jobs in demand.
After you graduate in Germany
Non-EU graduates of German universities can get a permit of up to 18 months to look for qualified work. It cannot be renewed. You need proof of your degree, health insurance and enough money to live on, and you can take any job during that time. Apply before your study permit ends. See the official job search permit page.
Tips before you apply
- Check your job on the official recognition portal. Germany has over 400 regulated professions.
- If you hold a degree from outside Germany, you generally need an anabin database extract to enter for work. The Federal Employment Agency explains this.
- Start German early. DAAD says employers outside research and IT will probably expect fluency.
- Do internships or part-time work while you study, and use your university’s careers office.
- Compare the official list of professions in demand with your interests before you choose a course.
