On this page
Many Nigerian students pick a course by asking which degree leads to a job. No official body ranks degrees that way. What you can check is how long each course takes and which council licenses the career after it. This guide covers 10 courses with clear career paths. It shows the typical length, the regulator you must register with, and the main jobs graduates move into.
Status: No single deadline. This is a course guide, not a scholarship. Admission runs through the JAMB UTME each year, so check the dates on your chosen university’s admission page (checked October 27, 2026).

Lengths come from UNN Medicine, UNN Nursing Science, UNN Accountancy, UNN Economics, UNIBEN Engineering, BUK Computer Science and the NUC agriculture curriculum. NUC raised the Doctor of Pharmacy programme from five to six years. Direct entry is often one year shorter, but not always. UNN Accountancy, for example, runs four years for all modes of entry.
What licensing each career needs
- Medicine: new doctors must complete 12 months of uninterrupted housemanship at an MDCN-accredited centre before full registration. See the MDCN housemanship page.
- Nursing: NMCN runs the professional exams for nurses and midwives and issues practising licences, renewed every three years. See the NMCN functions page.
- Pharmacy: fresh graduates do a compulsory one-year internship under a registered pharmacist. Registration comes after the internship. See PCN pharmacist registration.
- Engineering: to register as an engineer you need a COREN-accredited degree, at least four years of professional experience, an NYSC certificate and an oral interview. See the COREN registration guidelines.
- Accounting: the ICAN exam has 15 subjects in three levels, and you need 36 months of practical experience for the ACA. Graduates of ICAN-accredited accounting programmes get some exemptions. See the ICAN syllabus. ANAN membership needs a one-year course at the Nigerian College of Accountancy, Jos, and a 36-month Accountants-in-Training programme. See ANAN membership.
- Computing: CPN offers graduate membership to holders of a computing degree or HND. See CPN membership categories.
What official labour data says
The National Bureau of Statistics reports unemployment by level of education, not by course. In its labour force report for Q2 2024, unemployment was 4.3% overall and 4.8% among people with post-secondary education. In Q1 2024, the figures were 5.3% and 9.0%. These numbers do not show which degree leads to the most jobs.
How to choose your course
- List two or three careers you would enjoy for years, not only for pay.
- Check the length of each course and the extra training after it.
- Read the licensing rules on the council’s own website.
- Confirm that your university’s programme is accredited by NUC and, where it applies, by the professional council.
- Check the UTME subject combination on the university admission page.
Tips before you apply
- Plan for the full path. Medicine and pharmacy take about seven years before full registration.
- For economics or agriculture, add a skill or a professional exam. ANAN offers a conversion course for graduates of other fields.
- Ask the department how many semesters students really take to graduate.
